Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation Announces $1.045 Million in Awards

Grants will fund projects at 25 journalism organizations nationwide

OKLAHOMA CITY — Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation (EEJF) announced today the distribution of $1.045 million in grants to 12 journalism organizations nationwide.

Founded by Edith Kinney Gaylord, Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation’s mission is to invest in the future of journalism by building the ethics, skills and opportunities needed to advance principled, probing news and information.

The following grants were awarded to organizations for projects addressing the foundation’s core areas of focus:

Investigative Reporting

• $250,000 to Oklahoma Watch for investigative and explanatory journalism with increased development of projects of regional or national significance.

• $100,000 to Investigative Newsource to support data-based, investigative journalism.

• $100,000 to InvestigateWest for investigative reporting on otherwise uncovered issues.

• $75,000 to Fund for Investigative Journalism to provide grants to independent investigative reporters; and to encourage diversity in the field of investigative reporting.

• $75,000 to Carolina Public Press to expand reporting capacity by recruiting and training dedicated reporting staff across the state.

• $50,000 to The Lens for watchdog reporting resulting in increased demand for a transparent, accountable and engaged government.

• $50,000 to Investigative Post to grow a digital audience and donor base by producing more content and conducting market research.

• $50,000 to PublicSource to plan, structure and support a loyal donor program.

Oklahoma Journalism

• $70,000 to University of Oklahoma’s Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication for the Oklahoma Institute for Diversity in Journalism to host a journalism camp for underrepresented high school students; and for the Oklahoma Scholastic Media Initiative to provide grants to high schools starting or improving online newspapers.

Professional Development

• $100,000 to Investigative Reporters and Editors for Watchdog Workshops, providing high-caliber training to support the skills necessary for credible investigative journalism.

• $75,000 to Online News Association for the Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education; and for the Women’s Leadership Accelerator, a development program for women pushing digital innovation in journalism.

Special Opportunities

• $50,000 to Colorado College for the Journalism Institute for professional journalists to present and/or teach co-curricular classes and engage directly with students in workshop settings.
